🔥3 activities for helping students activate new VOCABULARY🔥
(I actively use them in my CAE/General C1 Courses)
1. Practising with pictures (see pictures 1-2)
The easiest one is to attach some pictures and new vocabulary on the same slide. Create a question to help students put new vocabulary into practice. However, there is one (more interesting yet challenging) way 👇
- after you’ve studied new vocabulary, open a slide with pictures;
- ss have to think which new words can be used for the pictures, brainstorm them and put on the slide;
- then they describe these pictures USING the words they brainstormed. If they use the word, they cross it out. By the end of the discussion no words should be left
2. Paraphrasing questions and discussing them (see picture 3)
- you’ve studied new words
- then you make a list of questions
- ss have to paraphrase the questions using new words and ask each other
📌 For example, we’ve learnt the phrase “go out like a light” (go to sleep quickly)
I make a question: Do you fall asleep easily?
They have to paraphrase the question and ask their partner: “Do you usually go out like a light?”
3. Questions with “HAVE YOU EVER?” (see picture 4)
- I put on the slide new words
- students ask each other question using one word/phrase in it BUT each question should start with “Have you ever….?”
